Eda's Oddities can be found around Deerington at odd hours. She resells items she finds around town, mostly in the junkyard, but also in other forms of garbage or perhaps shoplifted from one of Deerington's more reputable businesses.

If you're in need of something, you can also request a commission and Eda or her handy associates with find the item for you!

IN CHARACTER

Character Name: Eda Clawthorne

In-Game Tattoo Placement: Inside her right wrist
Current Health/Status: Cursed, but mostly healthy
Age: 40s

History
Eda was born on the Boiling Isles. She has an older sister, Lilith, who was her best friend for most of their childhood. When they were five, they started school at Hexside School, where Eda started in the Potions track. However, Eda wasn’t satisfied with having to only learn one type of magic, which is standard for witches on the Boiling Isles. She started sneaking around school and eavesdropping on other classes using an elaborate tunnel system that she (supposedly) built herself, which magically connected classrooms throughout the school.

While at school, Eda was also a menace to school authority. She got in trouble more days than not, causing chaos in the name of their justice (paying back kids who bullied her sister) or simply chaos (she has a problem with authority). She was also on the school Grudgeby team (like rugby, but with more risk of death or maiming), and was the star player.

When it came time to join a coven, a requirement for witches when they’re of-age (18ish), Eda had her heart set on joining the Emperor’s Coven, the most elite of the covens, and the only one that allows witches to continue using all schools of magic. However, Lilith also wanted to join the Emperor’s Coven, but there was only spot open. The Emperor’s Coven ordered the two of them to duel for the place. The night before the duel, Lilith snuck into Eda’s room and cursed her, hoping that the curse would give Lilith the advantage in the duel. However, Lilith didn’t know that Eda planned to step down and give her the spot anyway. She knew Lilith wanted it more than her, and she didn’t want to duel her sister.

Refusing to join a coven was the first of Eda’s many crimes. By the time the series begins, Eda is the most wanted criminal on the Boiling Isles. Her crimes range from petty theft to operating a stand without a permit to not joining a coven. None are very violent, but she has a general disregard for laws that don’t suit her. During the time between childhood and the beginning of the series, Eda started several businesses, including selling human artifacts and making questionable elixirs; she found and decided to room with King, the King of Demons (and adorable dog/cat/skeleton creature); built the Owl House, her remote home protected by Hooty, her house demon; acquired Owlbert, her Palismen, or the creature who lives on her Witch’s Staff and who can gain sentience and run errands for her. She also dated many questionable men, including those who identify as monsters and demons.

At the beginning of the series, Eda is content to live in the Owl House with King, Hooty, and Owlbert, run her businesses, and generally stay out of the public eye. Enter Luz, the human, a young, excitable nerd who followed Owlbert into the Boiling Isles after one of his errands to the Human World to collect human objects for Eda to sell. For info on the rest of her canon history, see season 1 plot summaries.

Personality:
At her core, Eda is an individual. She refuses conformity in any form. She only follows rules when they suit her, and is happy to cross lines if they don't. She’s true chaotic neutral: Eda and her chosen few are her priority, and she will get what she wants no matter the path to get there. For example, Eda refuses to join a coven because they set limitations on her magic, even though by law, all witches must be a part of a coven. This is her first step to being a wanted criminal. She lives (mostly) alone to avoid the pressures that society would put on her, and does everything she can to assure her personal freedom. She’s self-sufficient to a fault. When her curse is starting to take hold, and her elixir is no longer working, she refuses to get help, even when the alternative is to be an owl beast forever. Her worst fears are to be one of many, to be dull and drab and typical, and to be dependent on anyone else for just about anything.

She has the impulse control of someone a quarter of her age, with a love for shiny things, riches, and gambling. In one episode, her compulsion to gamble leads to her losing King to a crooked vendor. In another, her impulse control led her to purposefully body-swap herself, Luz, and King, leading to them all being kidnapped or nearly imprisoned. In part, this impulse control is due to her disregard for the rules, and another is due to her never really growing up. Since she refuses to follow the rules, she never had to learn how to follow them, which leads to her acting more like a child than a powerful 40-something-year-old witch. Her impulse control also makes her rather irresponsible. She doesn't concentrate on one thing at a time, and jumps from thing to thing, regardless of the consequences, like the time her desire to beat King in a competition to be interviewed by a 12-year-old led her to leave Lu and Amity in danger in Willow's dream because she couldn't hear their signal that they wanted to leave.

Eda doesn’t care what people think of her. She isn’t self-conscious about just about anything and will act before thinking the majority of the time. The only lines she walks are those to keep herself safe from guards, and from the terrors of the Boiling Isles. She’s proud of where she’s shirked what was expected of her, framing the wanted poster of her and hanging it in her living room. She’s also proud when Luz, her apprentice and ward, gets her first wanted poster, like it’s a rite of passage. Despite all this, she's quite vain, but it's mostly for herself, instead of for others. She's knows that she's attractive, but she performs her femininity on her own terms, wearing high heels every day, but also wearing a brown suit with elbow pads to Luz's first Grom.

Despite her individualism, Eda loves deeply, but it’s difficult to earn her love and trust. She loves five people (or owls, or demons): King, Hooty, Owlbert, Luz, and her sister, Lilith. She acts like a loner, but she really surrounds herself with people she loves, who are generally people who have no where else to go, people who are weirdos like her. She takes in strays, seeing herself in them. However, that doesn’t mean that she mothers them, at least in a traditional sense. The creatures who live with her are responsible for themselves, but Eda will protect them with her life when they need it. However, Eda is there for them when they need her. She would never let King or Luz get hurt if she could do something about it (Hooty is a bit more of an wildcard, there). Eda puts her own life and freedom on the line to help each of them at different times during the first season, going so far as to risk capture by the Emperor's Coven to rescue Luz from Lilith.

Eda won’t let her own ideals get in the way of others’ growth. In that way, her individualism is pure: she wants everyone to tread their own path. For example, Eda hated school, and hated the conformity that it brings with it. However, when she realized that she couldn’t teach Luz everything she wanted to know about being a witch, Eda went to Hexside School and made a deal with Principle Bump to get Luz into the school, even though it meant having to right many of the wrongs she wrought on the school in her time as a student. This isn’t to say that she is selfless, but that she can see the limitations of her own abilities and doesn’t mind being not the best at something. This was also reflected when she gave up her chance at joining the Emperor’s Coven because she knew her sister wanted it more.

Eda was never afraid of death. She accepted it in her years with the Owl Curse. She knew it was inevitable, and she did her best to live the way she wanted despite the curse. However, once Luz entered her life, Eda realized that she had been wasting it by only doing what she wanted all the time. She learned that there was more to life that messing around with King and swindling hapless witches by selling them human garbage. By the end of the first season, Eda found new meaning in her life, and started to change from a person who cared very little about anything but herself (and King, and Hooty) to a person who saw the value in relationships with other people, and who had a stake in their success, instead of only her own.

Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping
Powers:
Magic: Eda is the self-proclaimed most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles. She is incredibly powerful, and is one of few witches who use wild magic, or all types of magic. The show doesn’t define the boundaries of her power, but it seems like she can do just about anything: teleport, create magic weapons, light magic, fire magic, lightning magic, healing, etc, etc.

Staff & Palismen: Eda’s witch’s staff lets her fly, and has Owlbert, her Palismen, who she made and who can detach and fly on his own. He seems sentient and has a personality.

Invulnerability & anatomical liberation: Eda can pull off her hands, feet, or head, and be totally fine. She doesn’t seem to bleed, and it doesn’t seem to hurt. She can pop them right back on like a lego person’s head. She can survive a lot of things, and it’s unclear what could kill her.

Super strength and super speed
Eda has super strength, ie she can crush rocks with her bare hands, and super speed, she can run incredibly fast.

Hair pocket dimension
Eda can store just about anything in her hair.

The Owl Curse
Eda is cursed to become an owl beast if the curse isn’t properly managed with elixirs. In her cursed form, she becomes a large grey griffin-like creature. As the owl beast, she is bigger and strong, and has sharp teeth. She can seemingly eat just about anything. She doesn’t seem to have access to her magic in this form, and she loses her sense of self. She can be stunned by bright lights and can be returned to her humanoid form with her elixir.

Warping:
Magic
Eda’s power will work, for the most part, but she’ll tire more easily, and things just won’t work sometimes. The simpler the spell, the most likely it is to work. The bigger the spell, the more likely it is to either not work, or backfire on her.

Invulnerability & anatomical liberation:
I want her to still be able to pop her limbs and head off, but someone stabbing her/poisoning her/anything that would affect critical organs in her chest-area (heart, stomach, etc) will kill her.

Staff and Palismen
Her staff can still fly and Owlbert can still detach and is sentient.

Super strength and super speed
She’ll keep these as is.

Owl Curse
In canon, the elixir becomes less and less powerful as time goes on, but since Deerington is a different plane, the progression will stop getting worse and  the curse is still manageable by drinking elixir daily. She will still be affected by her curse in the same way as in canon if she doesn't manage it appropriately.

Inventory
  • Owlbert (magic staff and palismen, sort of a pet)
  • Framed wanted poster
  • Framed picture of Luz at an eating contest
  • A month's worth of elixir (gives her enough time to figure out an alternative)
  • Pajamas + slippers
  • A mug that says 30 & flirty on it
