So like Luz's glyphs. [ She doesn't love being schooled, but at least this is true, but isn't really news to her.

Eda's magic varies, sort of, but it is mostly gold circles in the air. But she also worked very hard, and very long, to make it that way. ] She got 'em from watching my magic. Well, she got the first one that way, with her phone thing-y.

There can be influence.

( because certainly much of hecate's magic came a little more neutral, or dramatic depending on what she wanted. she could do a transference without the black wisps but she liked the effect. not that she'd admit it )

But Luz's glyphs are also a different type of magic, a little similar to both of ours but not completely comparable. What she'll be able to do under our tutelage we have yet to see.

( and our was intentional. you are still her mentor, eda )

[ She catches that "our," and levels Hecate with a look, watching her for a moment. ] Yeah, well. I'm not a very good teacher. I tried. She didn't like my style.

[ Her style was getting Luz to eat different types of snow, but it would have worked! ]

She seems to like your strict teacher act. Think there's a teacher like you in those books she's always reading.

( whilst there's a little appreciation for the compliment )

Luz will need more. ( not to shoot herself down but each teacher had their ways and their witches were well educated and rounded out. as good as she was different people made different things )

And magic isn't solely what you can teach her. ( or mentor. someone to talk to, someone to do what hecate couldn't. because she didn't do the emotional or comforting or that side of mentoring whilst eda did really care for her )

Well, yeah. I need to teach her how to cook. She said she'd end up eating squirrels if I kick it. [ That was not a fun conversation.

Eda looks Hecate over again. ] I'm not trying to dump her on you, if that's what you're worried about. She's my kid, and my responsibility. I can't teach her much, is the thing. Like you said, her magic is different, and the way she wants to learn is different.

I'm a doer, y'know? She's a thinker. [ It's the first time she's really articulated it, but that's exactly why she got Luz into Hexside in the first place. Sure, Eda's good at magic, but that doesn't mean she's good at teaching magic. ]

Even thinkers need to do.

( and whilst hecate wasn't glad that eda was trying to foist luz on her it was at least reassuring to hear that eda did care )

But as you said... even if it is not magic there are other things she needs to learn. And conversations to have even about magic.

( because she knows that luz will tell her everything about what she was learning, every girl at cackles queued to talk to their parents )

Well, yeah. You gonna give my a syllabus or something? [ Eda snorts another laugh, but it dies pretty quickly.

She leans over the table toward Hecate ] Look, it's not like I'm not grateful that you agreed to teach her. You're not getting anything out of this. Why d'you wanna do it?

A witch should know her power.

( she frowns, sounding surprised that eda had to ask. she might not know luz but aside from this being her job it was the right course of action )

A witch should have control, be able to use her magic safely... otherwise she's a danger to us all.

( magical and nonmagical alike )

Luz is new to her magic, no different to the girls I teach. They learned, so can she.

[ Well, she's not wrong. Eda eyes her for another second, then shrugs a shoulder. ]

Guess so. [ And sounds a bit like what Belos would say, but Eda doesn't mention that.

She breaks the tension with an easy smile, waving a hand ] Well, she's a good kid. Likes to learn. Like, really likes to learn. I think you'll hafta stop her from getting ahead of you. Never met another kid who wanted to learn magic so much. [ Not that she knows that many magic kids, but still ]

I've met students like that before.

( naturally, and students on the other end of that )

I can handle that part. She doesn't set the pace of it.

( even if luz whined hecate would be very firm at sticking to her plan, making sure luz was competent over jumping ahead )

Guess you've been teaching for a long time, huh? [ Mostly because she seems like she'll take absolutely no shit. Probably the sort of teacher Eda would have hated, but, hey, if Luz likes her and if she can teach her something, Eda isn't going to complain.

But that brings her to: ] Your world got any rules about what kind of magic kids can learn?

( damn right hecate takes no shit )

Witches in my world follow the Code. Magic cannot be left to run amok, nor can witches be allowed to misuse their magic.

( things that could easily lead to dangerous or deadly actions )

But if you're concerned about what I'm teaching you're welcome to oversee it.

( hecate only offers because she has nothing in her magic nor teaching to hide, because she's competent and confident. and her work cannot be faulted )

And this code, what's it say? [ Eda watches her, talking a lot more carefully than she ever does normally. A code, she doesn't.love that there's a code. ]

Would you like me to cite it for you paragraph by paragraph? ( because of course hecate knows the entire thing by heart ) Or bring it to you to read?

( though she also doubts eda would go for that which is why she offers--- )

The code is our way of life, to ensure the safety and protection of every witch, to ensure that the nonmagical world doesn't learn of its existence.

Yeah, alright. And your way of life is what? [ Eda narrows her eyes, then just gets out with it: ] There's this rule in my world where witches can only use once kind of magic. You don't do anything like that, right?

No. There are more magics than are taught at the academy-- ( such as that special connection green witches had ) --but they are for a witch's own discovery. We teach them what they need, spells and potions to be used, to know their craft. But there is always more to learn.

( and that she sounds a little passionate about )

Well, good. [ Eda snaps her fingers and is back to smiling again. ] Luz got old Bump to change his rule too, didn't want her to hafta go backwards! Being stuck just learning potions was ugh. [ She shudders with a grimace ]

( there's the mildest hint of a smile at that because whilst hecate might teach potions and be very fond of them she knows that a witch isn't competent with solely potions )

She won't. And... I've taught a witch from a non-magical background before.

( so mildred had ended up being from a witching family but it was as if she hadn't with how her life had been )

I know the challenges Luz faces and what she needs.

Have ya? Huh. I've never met one before Luz. [ The words hang in the air for a second before Eda stands up straight, crossing her arms and smiling ]

Well, we'll see how it goes. You settling in okay otherwise? I dunno if I would've wanted to jump into stuff right away. Took me too months to get this set up. [ She nods to her shop. To be fair, her first two months, she was blood drunk, then dead, but that aside. ]

( she pauses, partly not certain what to answer that with and not sure if she wants to answer. but eda has helped her )

Having witches around is familiar. This will at least occupy my time.

( and hecate isn't someone who does idle well. she also has no idea what to make of this town )

Yeah. Around trying to stay alive. [ Eda snorts a laugh. She considers for a moment. ] It is nice. Having another witch around.

( eda don't you terrify her. even if she'd never admit it. but staying alive being a bigger concern than normal life? yikes )

And... there certainly will be plenty to talk about.

( discuss, compare. get to know about the other. olive branch there )

Oh, yeah. You ever need to get away from the humans, let me know. I mean, I do live with a human and a wolf kid, but it's the thought that counts. [ She laughs again, the sound bursting into the cold air. ] They aren't so bad, the humans here. I like some of 'em.

...don't tell them I said that.

( her expression says all in that she really doesn't know what to make of that, that eda likes some of the humans.

or lives with a wolf... child. but that's a different bridge to cross )

And... ( time to make her own tiny olive branch ) If there are any ingredients that I find which you need... I will share them.

It's awkward for a moment. Eda really hasn't been around adult witches in a very long time. It's strange, and kind of nice, and kind of uncomfortable. ]
