you know that mountain, south of town? there are some big blue rocks there. sit by them for a while, and you'll get your magic back to (almost) full, at least for a while. doesn't last forever though
( she's not wasting time on that, not when something's important even if she is a little panicked.
which is why she transferences over, an awkward knock at the door before she waits, fiddling slightly with her pocketwatch to try and calm some of that panic.
but it's happened before, she's seen it. magic is broken here and maybe the stones aren't acting precisely the same in this world, not if it's not happened already, but they're related )
Eda waves her fingers and the front door opens. Her hair is tied back from her face with a handkerchief, and she brushes debris off her dress. Another flick of her fingers and she has her coat in her hands, shrugging it on. ]
So your teleporting still works. You wanna fly or use that?
( holding her hand out, a wiggle of fingers materialises her broom into it before she lays it horizontal in the air, the magic holding it steady as she seats herself onto it )
After you.
( her sharp tap raises her broom into the air, following eda over )
[ Eda slips onto her staff and flies up into the air, heading south over the town. It's chilly up here, but at least they aren't trapped in a hotel anymore. Eda's a little ticked off that she didn't get to keep any of her stuff except that awful feather jacket (not even the shoes!), but at least she's free. ]
( and this is the part that she doesn't particularly want to admit, not wanting to acknowledge a weakness )
It... wasn't there. ( it was easier to say that than it weakening her through use but there had been a moment when she'd tried casting and nothing had happened.
and that's what had happened before, magic draining away )
[ Hecate's candidness is making Eda uncomfortable. She looks pointedly ahead, grimacing to herself. This is why kids are easier. They'd just say what they meant, and not couch it like this. ]
You gotta sit there for a long time, centering yourself. Guessing that won't be a big deal for you.
[ Eda doesn't really have an answer to that. She takes them down into the mouth of a cave, skimming along the rock toward the right fork.
There's a thick fog, and when they're through the thick fog, a room full of giant blue stones. It feels safer in here, safer than anywhere else in Deerington. ]
Well, here ya go. This the sorta stone you were expecting?
( when they arrive hecate isn't certain if she's relieved or saddened by the look of the cave and the stones in the room )
Not so many.
( there was only ever one founding stone at an academy but this place was different. if it was related to sodder... )
Too much magic would be needed to power this many founding stones but-- ( judging by their glow at least ) This is something else. Something still with power.
I dunno if they work the way you're thinkin'. Sure, they're where we get power, but I dunno if they're the source? This whole town is magic. These just hone it.
[ Eda walks to the middle of the stones and drops down cross-legged, her staff across her thighs. ]
[ Eda gives her a little smile. She gets it, at least mostly. The fear, of losing her power. It used to scare her more than anything. It still sort of does. ]
C'mon, pull up a rock, and let's get to meditating.

magic is messed up here, but you can fix it

oh.
fuck )
I need to see those stones.
( for reasons other than what eda thinks )

( she's had issues transferencing to unknown places already, to eda's was simple, and if this was far or unknown-- perhaps her broom would be easier )
I have a broom here.

What'd you magic do? Explode?

When my magic failed before... I almost died.
no subject
[ That's a little more intense that Eda thought it would be. ]
Like, you don't have it at all? That, that's pretty bad.
no subject
( look, she'd considered giving up her magic at one point to fix magic but this was very different. losing it like this would be more traumatic )
But those stones may provide the answer. More than you realise.

( she frowns, wondering what eda is pulling from this )
Have you ever heard of a founding stone?
no subject
[ Eda blinks. ]
A what now?
no subject
( it doesn't really surprise her that eda doesn't know what one is )
It provides the magic to a witching school but if they break... everything turns to ice, everything that was magical.
( the slightly haunted look in her might tell eda that hecate's experienced this -- she had mentioned about her magic failing once before )
If these stones may have acted similarly... it could be an answer.
no subject
[ Eda glances back at her, catching that look. But she's also not really the type to pry. ]
I dunno. Maybe. Some people call it Sodder's heart. I dunno if it's really her heart, but it sure feels like the source of her power.
If it breaks? I dunno if anyone's tried.
no subject
( and that panics her ever so slightly, particularly if it is the source of sodder's power )
But if our magic already is faltering... it could be broken in part. Though restoring it comes at cost.
no subject
[ That isn't good. Eda doesn't have a huge stake for staying in this world, but some of the kids she's taken to do.
She steers toward the mountain looming in the distance. ]
Guess that could explain why the town's glitching.
no subject
( she'd rather not sacrifice her magic for somewhere that she doesn't care about )
Something to solve.
