[ She doesn't answer, but she does head over right away, flying south through town and landing outside 25 Raccoon Alley, Luz in tow. ] I dunno, kid, it seems serious. No clue why the kid would get put in a veiny cocoon.
[ She taps on the door, then goes to open it anyway. ] Fern? Where's the smart kid?
[Luz, who's just gotten home recently, was about to start cleaning the house when she noticed that Eda leaving her inbox messages up...and promptly seeing that message about Varian freaked her, but big time.
Thankfully, Eda had give her the cowboy hat, so donning it Luz turned into a raven and flew over as quickly as she could. This was the third time she'd been in this form though, so upon getting there, the girl was out of breath].
"Up-drafts-are-really-cold," she managed to stammer. "W-what happened to Varian?"
[Fern, stressed as all get out, heads into the living room and starts to page while he waits. When both Eda and Luz arrive he doesn't look particularly relieved - in fact, he's looking pretty scruffy, like he's been tearing at his grass.]
He's - he's in his room.
[Though, before he heads upstairs he'll go over to the hall closet and pull out of a red and gold Gryffindor scarf to give to Luz. It's got a low level warmth enchantment on it, courtesy of Luna, so hopefully it'll help.
Then he'll lead the way up to Varian's bedroom, his whole body getting tense as he enters the room. Varian is covered in gnarly-looking veins on his bed.]
[Sadly, Fern has, though he keeps quiet about that for now. This isn't that situation, and he really doesn't want to think about it right now.
When they reach Varian's bedroom he's just going to remain in the doorway, his grass unconsciously twitching a little at the agitating thought of getting any closer. He sounds frazzled.]
I don't know, I woke up this morning and he was just - like this.
[He reacted when he cut the vein, so there's that. He's agitated as he says that, and Luz pointing out the obvious has him snapping a little.]
You don't think I don't know that now??
[A smart, reasonable person who isn't a huge screw-up wouldn't have started cutting the stupid cocoon like he did. He's regretting that so, so much right now, and he drags his hands down his face.]
Peter's pamphlet mentioned this can happen to people sometimes. They go home and then come back. I haven't seen anything on the network about this happening to other people, so - so maybe it's that. I don't know.
Huh. Well... [ Eda looks back over at Fern with a twist in her lips. She's taking a moment, to actually be helpful. Fern spirals, she's already learned that, and already messed it up a few times. Time to act like the adult she supposedly is. ] I don't think you hurt him.
A few days? Think you can last a few days without the smart kid? Might be a good idea, just to wait and see.
[Luz blushes, and immediately felt pretty bad. Fern was probably feeling pretty rotten enough about that without her saying anything. She was just reacting to the idea that Varian might be hurt-she was just speaking to him not that long ago! But she hadn't wanted to make Fern feel bad either].
It might be good to make sure he's comfortable and protected. With all the stuff that happens here, maybe find a good place to keep him safe?
[Of course, as soon as Fern has said that he regrets it, just like he regrets most things in his life. He makes an exasperated noise, unconsciously reaching up to rub his upper arm where his tattoo is.]
I... I don't know. The house is safe, we got an enchanted antler wreath the keeps monsters from breaking in and I can keep an eye on him....
[There is absolutely no doubt that if something manages to break in here he is killing the shit out of it. That doesn't help reassure him, though.]
What if he doesn't wake up? What if I did hurt him and he's stuck in there?
[Yeah, he's clearly having a bit of a rough time with the thought of having to spend an unknown amount of time without Varian. Sorry guys, he's really, really attached.]
Here, lemme... [ Eda turns back to Varian in the cocoon and peels off the bandaid. Tossing it aside, she dredges up her (limited) knowledge of healing magic and draws a little gold circle in the air.
After a moment, the cut glows gold, then seals up like it was never there, except for a little bit of pink in its stead. ] No harm done. As for him being stuck. [ Eda steps over to peer at his face, just visible under the cocoon. ] When people leave, they just leave. I dunno why Sodder would knock somebody unconscious when she's torturing everyone else. Seems fishy to me. So I'd bet that he's back in a few days. If I'm wrong, I'll owe ya the 20 bucks I won from triglyceride last week, and then we'll figure something else out.
[Luz was a million times grateful that Eda was here helping, and even being her usual Eda self without ignoring Fern's pain. Times like these reminded Luz how happy she was to be working for Eda].
I think Varian is pretty safe with you around. Not everyone can have one of the best bodyguards in Deerington watching over him. Maybe a few small traps wouldn't hurt if you're really concerned some bogus stuff might go down later.
[Seeing Eda be able to heal the cut he left is a little reassuring. He still feels guilty for causing it, but at least it can't hurt Varian anymore. Small victories?
He also doesn't like just leaving Varian, but if there's nothing Eda can do with her magic, then he doesn't really have any other options. Luz is offering some much-needed distraction, and he glances over at her.]
Varian's got some alchemy traps in the basement. I think I could set them up.
[It'll give him something to do for a little while, and he sorely needs that.
He'll look back over at Eda, as well.]
... If he's still like this in a couple of days can I call you guys again?
Yeah, yeah, his alchemy stuff should do it. I could also put a shield around him if you want-- hold up.
[ She blinks, and idea coming to her head.
She turns back around, squinting at Varian. It's a bad idea, probably, to try and teleport Varian out of there, but, hell. She concentrates hard and draws another circle in the air and--
Nothing. ]
Eh, it was worth a shot. I could also try to get you in there, but who knows how that would go here.
