[ It's a slow day at the shop, which isn't exactly a shop, and more just a couple tables covered in random objects from potions to tchotchkes to car parts.
Eda's bundled up, because it's cold out here, and she grins at Hecate ]
Hecate! What, this? [ She slaps a hand against the table ] Eh, did this back home, too. There I sold a bunch of human garbage to witches who didn't know better. Here... I sell a bunch of human garbage to humans who don't know better!
[ She laughs, then sighs. Maybe she's being too honest, but it's her livelihood. And it's not like she lies, exactly, about where this stuff comes from. It's a service! She finds the stuff so everyone else doesn't have to. ]
Oh yeah? I got a corner on the market, at home. [ Seeing as she had the only known portal to the human world. She raises an eyebrow, eying Hecate. ] Yeah? About my world, and Luz? Sure, sure. Shoot.
What? My magic? [ Eda blinks. She wasn't exactly expecting that. She grins, nodding her head. ] What d'you wanna know? Mine's not that much like Luz's. No glyphs here. [ Although, if she does go home, they'll be in her near future, but she doesn't want to think about that.
Instead, she thinks for a moment, then reaches back into her mass of grey hair. She pulls out a tiny seed, then draws a small gold circle over it, and another rose bursts into bloom.
With a flourish, she holds it out for Hecate ] It's more like that.
( she'd been expecting a conversation about their magic, maybe eda showing her something but she hadn't expected this. and as hecate looks at the rose, moves to take it from her there's a much gentler nature to her movements -- she doesn't sniff it but she does hold it with the delicacy and care of a precious thing, of someone touched by the gesture )
We don't use glyphs, not quite in the same way as Luz. ( sigils played parts at times but that became more personal ) We cast with spells, potions. Instinct.
( as she assumes that eda had then. and even though her tone is ever still as factual it's lost a little of that hardness, not completely but this is more something in between the party and when she'd gone to eda's house to meet luz )
Instinct. I like that. [ Eda smiles at her, pleased with herself. ] I can do a whole lot more than that, plant magic is only one kind that we have.
We're magic, and our magic comes from the Boiling Isles. [ She looks around at the town around them ] There's magic here, too, but it's not the same. It's... harder. Darker. At least our magic works here. Dunno what I'd do if it didn't. [ Again, not thinking about the fact that she will, in fact, have to live without magic, sooner rather than later. At least, that's what Luz told her. ]
We use potions, and spells, and incantations. Whole lotta stuff. But I like this kind [ She wiggles her fingers ] the best.
( hecate might have offered to give up her magic at one point but she honestly couldn't imagine life without it. she'd do it if necessary but magic has always been a part of her, something she could always feel. not feeling that-- )
For us, witches begin with spells and potions, though experienced witches can learn to cast nonverbally.
( as hecate did with most things. more powerful spells or things of her creation required casting aloud, other things still needing a potion, something more powerful than solely her but in daily life she was enough )
It may be that much of your magic is also similar.
Yeah, yeah, us too. Guess you remember that better'n me, being a teacher. I haven't been at school in... two decades? More? [ She barks a laugh ] Didn't even really think about it much until Luz showed up.
( in some ways hecate never left school, through her own education and being a teacher she's spent most of her life in it. and particularly in cackle's )
I suppose most witches don't.
( she adjusts the rose to hold it in her left hand, letting her right move in a small, guided wave, that same potion bottle that hecate had held earlier carefully floating up )
This-- ( there'd already been a small wiggle of her fingers at the start of her cast, the direction coming more from her fingers than her entire hand, minuscule movements ) Is that instinct. Your... preferred ways.
[ Eda watches her with a smile forgotten on her face.
Sure, she's seen magic here, magic of all different kinds. But this is different. This is magic like her magic, a witch who understands similar things to her, a witch who seems to know what being a witch means.
Even if she is a teacher. ]
Yeah. Yeah, like that. Only, mines less sparkle, more circles. [ Never one to be upstaged, she draws another gold circle in the air and a twin potion rises up off the table. She watches Hecate to see what she's going to do with hers.
At least these potions aren't very important. They're just hair dye potions. ]
( honestly not where she'd expected this to go but she's starting to learn that eda is a very unexpected witch.
and whilst hecate is not one to show off... small gestures in educationally comparing magic is acceptable.
which is why as hecate closes her fist the potion bottles both disappear, black smoky ripples in the air. but it's okay, she just sent them to eda's home )
( and this is where hecate just slightly smiles, the mildest hint of amusement )
If you didn't still own them.
( but it's fine. she'll wave her hand over the table and those two same bottles will appear as if they'd never gone, same black smoky magic summoning them )
( ah, she's got you there eda. and you don't like schooling.
guess it has to be the right witch to get your interest )
In the spells. ( look, she's not going to call them effects. flares, marks. signatures ) My levitation... sparkled, transference appeared differently. Each spell has its own unique way.
( when she locked a door she drew it in the air, it leaving its mark there )
So like Luz's glyphs. [ She doesn't love being schooled, but at least this is true, but isn't really news to her.
Eda's magic varies, sort of, but it is mostly gold circles in the air. But she also worked very hard, and very long, to make it that way. ] She got 'em from watching my magic. Well, she got the first one that way, with her phone thing-y.
( because certainly much of hecate's magic came a little more neutral, or dramatic depending on what she wanted. she could do a transference without the black wisps but she liked the effect. not that she'd admit it )
But Luz's glyphs are also a different type of magic, a little similar to both of ours but not completely comparable. What she'll be able to do under our tutelage we have yet to see.
( and our was intentional. you are still her mentor, eda )
[ She catches that "our," and levels Hecate with a look, watching her for a moment. ] Yeah, well. I'm not a very good teacher. I tried. She didn't like my style.
[ Her style was getting Luz to eat different types of snow, but it would have worked! ]
She seems to like your strict teacher act. Think there's a teacher like you in those books she's always reading.
( whilst there's a little appreciation for the compliment )
Luz will need more. ( not to shoot herself down but each teacher had their ways and their witches were well educated and rounded out. as good as she was different people made different things )
And magic isn't solely what you can teach her. ( or mentor. someone to talk to, someone to do what hecate couldn't. because she didn't do the emotional or comforting or that side of mentoring whilst eda did really care for her )
Well, yeah. I need to teach her how to cook. She said she'd end up eating squirrels if I kick it. [ That was not a fun conversation.
Eda looks Hecate over again. ] I'm not trying to dump her on you, if that's what you're worried about. She's my kid, and my responsibility. I can't teach her much, is the thing. Like you said, her magic is different, and the way she wants to learn is different.
I'm a doer, y'know? She's a thinker. [ It's the first time she's really articulated it, but that's exactly why she got Luz into Hexside in the first place. Sure, Eda's good at magic, but that doesn't mean she's good at teaching magic. ]
Well, yeah. You gonna give my a syllabus or something? [ Eda snorts another laugh, but it dies pretty quickly.
She leans over the table toward Hecate ] Look, it's not like I'm not grateful that you agreed to teach her. You're not getting anything out of this. Why d'you wanna do it?
[ Well, she's not wrong. Eda eyes her for another second, then shrugs a shoulder. ]
Guess so. [ And sounds a bit like what Belos would say, but Eda doesn't mention that.
She breaks the tension with an easy smile, waving a hand ] Well, she's a good kid. Likes to learn. Like, really likes to learn. I think you'll hafta stop her from getting ahead of you. Never met another kid who wanted to learn magic so much. [ Not that she knows that many magic kids, but still ]

You wouldn't be the first witch to do that.
( even if selling to nonmagical people is weird to her but eda is from a very different world )
But that is what I wanted to talk to you about. Where you are from.

( or close enough that hecate agreed but-- )
What of your own practice?

( and whilst hecate wasn't glad that eda was trying to foist luz on her it was at least reassuring to hear that eda did care )
But as you said... even if it is not magic there are other things she needs to learn. And conversations to have even about magic.
( because she knows that luz will tell her everything about what she was learning, every girl at cackles queued to talk to their parents )

A witch should have control, be able to use her magic safely... otherwise she's a danger to us all.
( magical and nonmagical alike )
Luz is new to her magic, no different to the girls I teach. They learned, so can she.
